Continuing their efforts to address the concerns of Pennsylvania homeowners, Senators Chris Gebhard and Doug Mastriano have introduced a constitutional amendment aimed at eliminating school property taxes. The proposed Senate Bill 929 seeks to prohibit school districts from collecting property taxes starting July 1, 2029. The General Assembly would be tasked with finding alternative funding methods for the state’s public school system.
Senator Gebhard expressed his concern over the impact of rising property taxes on homeowners, stating, “It is outrageous and unacceptable that property taxes are causing Pennsylvanians to lose their homes.” He emphasized the importance of allowing voters to have a direct say in this matter through a constitutional amendment.
Senator Mastriano echoed these sentiments, highlighting the financial and moral implications of current tax policies. “Each year, thousands of our seniors—men and women who worked their entire lives, paid off their homes and played by the rules—are being thrown out of those very homes simply because they can’t keep up with an ever-growing tax bill,” he said.
The process for this constitutional amendment involves approval by the General Assembly during two consecutive legislative sessions before it can be placed on the ballot for Pennsylvania voters to decide.
