Sen. Doug Mastriano, chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, issued a statement on Mar. 9 following the fatal shooting of Pennsylvania State Police Corporal Timothy O’Connor during a traffic stop in Chester County.
The incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers during routine duties and the impact such tragedies have on families and communities. Mastriano said, “Last night, Pennsylvania lost a brave and faithful servant of our commonwealth.”
According to Mastriano’s statement, Cpl. O’Connor was conducting a traffic stop after reports of erratic driving when he was shot by the suspect, who then took his own life in what appears to be a murder-suicide. Mastriano said, “There are no words sufficient for a loss like this. What should have been a routine moment of service ended in unimaginable tragedy. It is a painful reminder that every time our law enforcement officers put on the uniform, they accept risks most of us will never fully understand.”
Cpl. O’Connor is survived by his wife Casey, their young daughter, and his parents Maureen and Tim. Mastriano said, “Our hearts are deeply broken for them. The loss of a husband, a father, a son and a protector leaves a space that can never truly be filled.” He added condolences from himself and his wife Rebbie to the family and state police community: “We pray that God surrounds them with His comfort, peace and strength in the difficult days ahead.”
Mastriano also referenced scripture: “Scripture reminds us that ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.’ Cpl. O’Connor lived that calling through his service and sacrifice.” He encouraged prayers for O’Connor’s family: “Please join Rebbie and me in lifting Cpl. O’Connor’s family, friends and fellow troopers up in prayer.”
