The Pennsylvania Senate has unanimously passed a bill proposed by Senator Doug Mastriano to designate July 27 as Korean War Veterans Armistice Day in the state. The legislation, known as Senate Bill 511, aims to honor those who served during the Korean War and educate future generations about their sacrifices.

The Korean War occurred from 1950 to 1953 on the Korean Peninsula, involving North Korea and South Korea, with support from the United States. During this conflict, approximately 36,000 U.S. Armed Forces members lost their lives, over 92,000 were wounded, and around 8,000 went missing. Many soldiers faced severe conditions including harsh winters and relentless combat.

Senate Bill 511 would add Korean War Veterans Armistice Day alongside Vietnam Veterans Day on March 29—a measure also championed by Mastriano. This initiative is intended to aid schools, communities, and civic organizations in commemorating those who served while preserving their legacy of freedom.

Mastriano stated: “Without the courage of American troops and our allies, South Korea’s fate could have mirrored that of North Korea – a dictatorship marked by oppression and suffering.” He emphasized that despite adversity faced during the war, the sacrifices made ensured South Korea’s continued freedom.

Following its approval in the Senate, Mastriano’s bill will now proceed to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
