Senator Doug Mastriano has introduced the Creation of Law in Our Schools Act, a legislative proposal aimed at enhancing historical knowledge and civic responsibility among students in Pennsylvania. The bill mandates the display of four foundational documents within public schools across the state.

The initiative comes in response to a survey indicating that only 47% of Americans can name all three branches of government, while one in five cannot name even one. Senator Mastriano emphasized the importance of historical awareness, stating, “A nation that does not know its history is doomed to lose its identity. By ensuring that our students see and engage with these bedrock documents, we will instill in them a greater appreciation of law, responsibility and the sacrifices made to build this great nation.”

Mastriano’s proposal follows similar legislative efforts in other states where laws have been enacted requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in schools. He highlighted Pennsylvania’s distinct approach: “With the passage of my bill, Pennsylvania would take a unique and comprehensive approach by ensuring that students engage with all four foundational documents that shaped our commonwealth and our nation. This is not just about teaching history – it is about preserving the very principles that make America great.”

The proposed legislation aims to foster an understanding among students regarding the laws, rights, and freedoms integral to American identity.
