In Pennsylvania, Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33) has introduced legislation to allow the sale of ivermectin over the counter. This move aims to ease the strain on the health care system and uphold the principle of individual liberties. Historically, ivermectin has been used for treating parasitic infections with a record of safety.
Mastriano emphasized, “Why would we limit access to important medication when it’s so difficult to see a doctor? It’s ridiculous enough that people don’t have the individual liberty to treat themselves and their loved ones using effective medication that has already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.” He added that the proposed legislation would enable Pennsylvanians to manage their health in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Senate Bill 601 proposes to make ivermectin more accessible, thereby reducing wait times and reliance on health care providers, especially for non-critical conditions. In rural and underserved areas of Pennsylvania, access to healthcare can be challenging due to various barriers, and the bill aims to address these challenges by making ivermectin available OTC.
Mastriano also highlighted that ivermectin has been extensively studied and typically has limited side effects when used according to medical guidelines. The medication is particularly safe for conditions such as scabies and lice, where its topical application is straightforward.
The legislation could help control the spread of parasitic diseases, such as scabies, and reduce unnecessary visits to doctors or emergency rooms. Other states, including Tennessee, have enacted similar laws, and a few others are considering such measures. Mastriano remarked, “It is time for Pennsylvania to join this important movement. With proven efficacy, a track record of safety and the growing demand for accessible treatments, making ivermectin available OTC would significantly benefit our communities.”
