Affirming its importance in both regional and national contexts.”
On May 21, 2025, the Pennsylvania Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee held a public hearing at Letterkenny Army Depot to examine its strategic and economic role. According to Senator Doug Mastriano’s official website, the hearing focused on the depot’s importance to national defense and its position as one of Franklin County’s largest employers. Stakeholders voiced concerns about potential federal budget cuts and emphasized the depot’s value in maintaining military readiness.
Letterkenny Army Depot employs roughly 2,260 people, making it one of the top three employers in Franklin County. According to the Franklin County Area Development Corporation’s 2024 profile, the depot significantly contributes to local economic stability through job creation and related business activity. Its operations also support regional infrastructure and community development.
U.S. Army depots like Letterkenny serve a crucial role in national defense by conducting equipment maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations. According to the U.S. Army’s Organic Industrial Base Strategic Plan, these depots ensure that military hardware is mission-ready, directly supporting operational effectiveness. They form the logistical backbone of the Army’s long-term readiness capabilities.
Mastriano has represented Pennsylvania’s 33rd Senate District since 2019 and is a retired U.S. Army colonel.
