Senator Doug Mastriano posted a series of historical reflections on his social media account in early August 2025, marking significant anniversaries and commemorations from American and world history.
On August 3, 2025, Mastriano referenced the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, writing: “August 2, 1776 – In Philadelphia, most of the 55 members of the Continental Congress signed the parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence.” The post highlights an important moment in U.S. history when representatives formally endorsed the nation’s founding document.
Later that day, Mastriano turned to international events with a post about Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. He stated: “August 2, 1990 – The Iraqi army invaded Kuwait amid claims that Kuwait threatened Iraq’s economic existence by overproducing oil and driving prices down on the world market. An Iraqi military government was then installed in Kuwait which was annexed by Iraq on the claim that”. This message recalls a pivotal event that led to international condemnation and ultimately resulted in Operation Desert Storm.
On August 4, he recognized a branch of the U.S. military with a brief note: “Aug 4th – Coast Guard Birthday”, acknowledging the annual celebration for the United States Coast Guard.
Senator Doug Mastriano is known for his interest in historical commemoration and often shares notable dates with his followers. The anniversary of the Declaration’s signing is widely regarded as a foundational episode in American independence. Similarly, Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait marked a turning point in Middle Eastern geopolitics and triggered major international military action less than a year later. The Coast Guard Birthday marks the founding date of one of America’s five armed services branches.
