Senator Doug Mastriano has voiced his disapproval of Penn State University’s plan to close its Mont Alto campus. He described the move as a “short-sighted measure” intended for minor cost-cutting by an administration focused on University Park, despite overseeing a multi-billion-dollar budget and a substantial endowment fund.
Mastriano stated, “Penn State’s decision to close the Mont Alto campus appears to be a band-aid attempt at minor cost-cutting, rather than a thoughtful approach to maintaining access to higher education for communities across Pennsylvania.” He emphasized that the university possesses ample financial resources to maintain its satellite campuses, which provide local students with access to quality education.
The potential closure could have significant consequences for Franklin and Adams Counties, including job losses and the elimination of an important higher education option. The Mont Alto campus is particularly recognized for its nursing and forestry programs, which are essential to supporting the local workforce.
Mastriano urged the Penn State Board of Trustees to delay any decision regarding the closure. He called for consideration of the broader role of the university in serving communities throughout Pennsylvania. “My hope is that the Penn State Board of Trustees will delay its vote and consider the bigger picture, rather than making drastic decisions that will harm local economies and limit educational opportunities,” he said.
