County of Franklin issued the following announcement on Aug. 18.
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners and Veterans Affairs Director Justin Slep presented a $2,500 We Support You Scholarship to Jordan Small, a recent graduate of James Buchanan High School, during today’s Board of Commissioners meeting.
Small graduated in the top third of her class and challenged herself, both through academically rigorous courses and through a variety of extracurricular activities. In addition to competing in three varsity sports – swimming, cross country, and track and field – Small served on both the yearbook and prom committees. Outside of school, she volunteered with the Mercersburg Mennonite Church Youth Group and as a junior counselor at Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp. Small also worked at CJs BBQ Smokehouse during her senior year.
Beginning this fall, Small will attend Slippery Rock University where she is enrolled in the college’s accelerated physician assistant program. She hopes to maintain a high academic standing during her studies as well as continue her participation in extracurricular activities such as club sports, a pre-physicians’ club and Christian organizations. After graduation, Small aspires to work in a hospital setting with a focus on pediatric emergency medicine.
“One of Jordan’s strengths is that she is a very steady, consistent and dependable young woman. She has consistently pushed herself academically, taken on time-consuming roles, and through it has excelled and proven that she works well when many demands are made of her,” said Lynn Troutman, a James Buchanan High School guidance counselor. “She knows what her career aspirations are and has not wavered on that. Her determination and consistency will help her excel even in the tremendous rigor of a physician assistant program.”
Small is the daughter of Daniel and Jennifer Small. Jennifer Small is a U.S. Army veteran who served as a combat medic at the Fort Sam Houston Troop Medical Clinic in San Antonio.
“We’re grateful for Jennifer’s service to our country. We’re honored to be able to present this scholarship to her daughter Jordan on behalf of all the residents of Franklin County, and we say ‘thank you’ again for all the donations from the community to the Franklin County Veterans Affairs Outreach Fund that have made this scholarship possible,” said Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.
