HARRISBURG – Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33) announced today that nearly $2.4 million in state funding will be allocated for the redevelopment of the former Gettysburg Foundry site in Adams County.
The site is slated to be redeveloped and prepared for future business use, with the aim of attracting an employer who can set up operations and hire local workers.
“The Commonwealth is taking steps to make properties like the Gettysburg Foundry site viable and attractive to potential employers,” Mastriano stated. “The goal is to get the Gettysburg Foundry site ready so an employer can acquire it, start a new business and staff it with local workers from the community.”
Previously a metalworks factory manufacturing aluminum castings and conducting aluminum smelting, the Gettysburg Foundry site was closed in the 1990s due to improper disposal of hazardous materials. The property remained vacant until 2022 when the Adams County Industrial Development Authority (ACIDA) assumed ownership. ACIDA has since been performing environmental assessments and remediation efforts on the nearly 50-acre site, aiming to restore it for commercial or industrial use.
State grants and loans will fund engineering costs and necessary site work, including demolishing existing structures, crushing concrete for fill material, disposing of remaining materials off-site, and grading for drainage purposes.
The project also includes establishing sanitary sewer connections by installing essential infrastructure such as 70 manholes, thousands of feet of pipe, and a pump station.
Funding is provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Business in Our Sites program. The total project cost is just under $2.4 million, with nearly $1 million coming from a grant and over $1.4 million from a loan with a 3% interest rate over a 20-year term.
