The looming energy crisis in Pennsylvania and across the nation is a growing concern, according to Representative Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland). As vice chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, Ecker recently addressed this issue, highlighting increased electricity demand as reported by PJM, an electricity supplier for over 65 million people. The company has observed significant load increases and anticipates continued growth in the coming years.
Ecker warns that consumers may face rate hikes within a year or potentially experience disruptions in electricity supply. He attributes these challenges to a shift towards wind and solar power generation, which he argues are not meeting current demand. While supporting clean energy as part of the production portfolio, Ecker insists it cannot be the primary source for generating electricity.
A notable development in this context is Microsoft and Constellation Energy's agreement to restart Three Mile Island, now known as Crane Clean Energy Center. This initiative aims to produce over 800 megawatts of carbon-free electricity for the grid.
Ecker also emphasizes the potential of natural gas, noting that about 40% of U.S. energy comes from this source. The United States stands as the largest exporter of natural gas globally. Pennsylvania holds vast reserves of natural gas, presenting an opportunity to enhance its role in energy markets.
Increasing reliance on natural gas could help meet growing demands that clean energy currently cannot fulfill while boosting the economy through job creation. For instance, restarting Crane Clean Energy Center is projected to generate 3,400 direct and indirect jobs based on a recent economic impact study.
"Consumers need and deserve reliable and affordable energy," Ecker states, underscoring his commitment alongside fellow House Republicans to advocate for these needs.
