State Rep. Torren Ecker | Pennsylvania 193rd Legislative District
In response to Governor Josh Shapiro's recent budget address, Representative Torren Ecker of the 193rd Legislative District expressed his reservations regarding the proposed plan. While acknowledging some agreeable aspects, Ecker voiced his opposition due to what he perceives as unresolved spending issues.
Ecker criticized the reliance on new taxes from marijuana legalization, stating, "Relying on new taxes from legalizing marijuana is not a bold step toward fiscal responsibility, it’s a risky gamble designed to create a new revenue stream without addressing the runaway spending that has burdened Pennsylvania for too long."
He further highlighted potential challenges associated with marijuana legalization. According to Ecker, under federal law, marijuana remains illegal, which could lead users to lose their legal rights concerning firearms. Additionally, he noted that employers might continue testing for marijuana use and take action against employees who test positive.
Emphasizing the need for a responsible budget approach, Ecker stated, "Now is the time for a budget that honors taxpayers and funds the core functions of state government." As part of his role on the House Appropriations Committee, he committed to developing a fiscally sound plan for Pennsylvania.
Representative Torren Ecker represents Adams and Cumberland counties in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
