Delone Catholic High School issued the following announcement on Feb. 25.
This Sunday is the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings are from Sirach 27:4-7; Psalm 92:2-313-16; 1 Corinthians 15:54-58; and Luke 6:39-45.
We are entering that time of year where Catholics realize that Lent is very quickly approaching (Ash Wednesday is this coming Wednesday!) and start to scramble to figure out what to do or give up for the season of repentance. If you are in this position right now, fear not; I am right there with you! The readings for this weekend, however, could be a good place to begin to discern what areas of our life on which the Lord would like to work with us this year.
In the first reading, the book of Sirach says, “When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear; so do one’s faults when one speaks. As the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace, so in tribulation is the test of the just.” When you are put in a challenging situation, what personality traits of yours rise to the surface? What would you like to change about how you react in those situations? Jesus in the Gospel tells us to remove the wooden beams from our own eyes before we try to remove the splinters from others’ eyes. Where are your own “wooden beams”? Are there areas of your life that are causing you blindness? Is there perhaps an area of your life that you are moved to address but are afraid to do so? Is that fear causing you to ignore it instead of work on it? These may all be places where we can ask the Lord what he wants us to give up for Lent.
(As an aside, if you are looking for something to do for Lent, check out this list from Hallow. Consider downloading the Hallow app for daily prayer throughout Lent; they have a great Lent program coming! I also love this list of God-centered things to do for Lent that I came across on Instagram.)
