Delone Catholic High School issued the following announcement on Mar. 11.
This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Lent. The readings are from Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18; Psalm 27:1, 7-9, 13-14; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 9:28-36.
What "mountaintop experiences" have you had in your spiritual life? When have you been caught up in the presence of Christ, just wanting to stay there and worship the Lord? Similar questions were posed to me years ago and I was fortunate to have examples to call to mind of times when I felt this consolation with the Lord. I am praying that our students are about to embark on a mountaintop experience as we leave for the Kairos retreat this afternoon.
This terminology comes from this weekend's Gospel reading of the Transfiguration, where Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain for an experience of prayer and the encounter Jesus' divinity; Peter's reaction is natural: "Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" (Lk 9:33). Who would not want to stay in that encounter? However, the purpose of this experience was not solely to witness Jesus' glory, for shortly after the Apostles and Jesus come down the mountain, he predicts his Passion and sets his face toward Jerusalem. Jesus shares a glimpse of his divinity with the Apostles before he undergoes his Passion and death, perhaps to help them better understand what is about to happen. Even when things are confusing or challenging or wrought with suffering, Jesus is still faithful - as faithful as God was in his covenant to Abraham in the first reading. Like the Apostles, we have the promise of Jesus' divinity and power. And while, also like the Apostles, we may still turn from him, his faithfulness and love is unchanging.
