DARLINGTON – Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33) will host a Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee hearing on Wednesday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the Darlington Township Volunteer Fire Department in Beaver County. The hearing aims to address the aftermath of the Norfolk Southern train wreck near the Pennsylvania border with Ohio that occurred on Feb. 3, 2023.
Residents affected by the train wreck will have the opportunity to share their experiences during the hearing. According to residents, "Residents will discuss the impact the train wreck continues to have on their lives one year after toxic chemicals from the railroad cars leaked onto nearby soil and into local waterways."
Additionally, residents will shed light on the environmental impact caused by the response to the spillage. As mentioned by residents, "Officials then lit the spillage on fire, releasing a large plume in the air that carried chemicals into the atmosphere."
The hearing will also focus on the broader effects of the train wreck, as residents are set to testify about various aspects of their lives post-incident. "Residents will testify about the effects on their physical and mental health, financial losses and other negative consequences from the train wreck."
