HARRISBURG – State Sen. Doug Mastriano has introduced Senate Bill 1185 aimed at suspending state funding for Pennsylvania colleges and universities that support antisemitism. Mastriano expressed his stance, stating, "Targeting Jewish students because of their religion or perceived ties to the state of Israel is disgusting and cannot be tolerated." He emphasized, "Antisemitism should find no safe harbor on any college or university campus funded with Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars."
The bill comes in response to recent pro-Hamas and anti-Israel protests and encampments at various higher education institutions in Pennsylvania. Mastriano's proposed legislation would disqualify state-owned or -related universities from receiving state funding if they authorize, facilitate, or support events promoting antisemitism on campus.
Highlighting the importance of ensuring safety for all students, Mastriano stated, "Jewish students deserve to feel the same level of safety and security on campus as students from any other religion or nation." The Senator underscored that colleges and universities failing to protect Jewish students and combat antisemitism should not receive state tax dollars.
The backdrop for this bill includes the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, Operation Al-Aqsa Flood attack by Hamas, resulting in a significant spike in antisemitic incidents. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has further intensified the debate, with U.S. college campuses becoming a focal point.
Mastriano's bill has been referred to the Senate Education Committee for consideration, as he continues to advocate for the safety and well-being of all students on campus.
