The Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee has unanimously moved forward with the nomination of Brig. Gen. John R. Pippy to become the adjutant general of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. This announcement was made by Sen. Doug Mastriano, who chairs the committee.
Gov. Josh Shapiro had appointed Gen. Pippy as the acting adjutant general on September 30, 2024, and nominated him for this role, which includes oversight of 18,000 Pennsylvania National Guard members and 2,500 state employees. The position also involves managing six state-owned veteran homes and programs serving over 700,000 veterans in Pennsylvania, along with the Keystone Youth Challenge Academy for at-risk youth.
Gen. Pippy brings over three decades of experience from his service in the Army and Pennsylvania National Guard. His military career includes participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve, earning him a Bronze Star among other honors. Before becoming acting adjutant general, he held roles such as director of Joint Staff at Joint Force Headquarters for the Pennsylvania National Guard and deputy chief of engineers for National Guard Affairs at U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Headquarters.
Senator Mastriano remarked on the significance of Gen. Pippy's appointment: “The Pennsylvania National Guard is third largest in the nation and has had a storied history,” he said. “I commend Gen. Pippy for his years of service to Pennsylvania and the nation. I have already worked with him on a number of issues and look forward to his continued leadership for both those serving and for those who served.”
The nomination will now proceed to the full Senate for further evaluation.
