Legislation has been introduced by Senator Doug Mastriano to officially recognize July 27 as "Korean War Armistice Day" in Pennsylvania. This proposal aims to add the day to Title 38, which includes other days honoring veterans of various wars.

Mastriano emphasized the significance of acknowledging the Korean War, often referred to as the "Forgotten War," and the sacrifices made by those who fought in it. "The Korean War has been overshadowed in history, labeled the ‘Forgotten War.’ But we must never forget the extraordinary bravery, sacrifice and heroism of those who fought to defend freedom on the Korean Peninsula and halt the spread of communism," he stated.

During the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, a total of 36,000 American servicemembers lost their lives, including 2,401 from Pennsylvania. The conflict resulted in over 92,000 wounded and more than 8,000 missing in action. These figures underscore the severe conditions faced by soldiers during this period.

Mastriano highlighted that despite these challenges, their efforts ensured South Korea's freedom and prevented millions from experiencing totalitarian rule. He remarked on South Korea's current status as a thriving democracy and economic power: "Despite these hardships, their sacrifice ensured that South Korea remained free, sparing millions from the horrors of totalitarian rule. Today, South Korea stands as a thriving democracy and an economic powerhouse, a testament to the valor of those who fought for its survival."

The proposed bill seeks not only to honor Korean War veterans but also to educate future generations about their contributions. Establishing this day would encourage schools and communities to remember those who served. Mastriano added: "The Korean War was not just a battle for territory; it was a battle for freedom. We owe it to those who fought and died to assure that their legacy is never forgotten."
